NCBE Number FAQs
What if I'm not sure whether I have an NCBE Number?
A link entitled "Not sure if you have an NCBE Number?" is available on the login page and allows you to search for an existing NCBE Number. A successful search will result in your NCBE Number and account e-mail address appearing at the top of the screen. An unsuccessful search will result in "No match was found" and indicates that you do not have an NCBE Number and should create one.
Why do I need an NCBE Number?
The NCBE Number is used as an alternative to the Social Security number as the unique identifier for an examinee's Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), and Multistate Professional Responsibility (MPRE) scores. Additionally, state bar admission offices may use the NCBE Number as an identifier for other admission-related purposes and may require all applicants to provide an NCBE Number.
If I have already taken the bar examination or the MPRE, do I already have an NCBE Number?
The mere fact that you previously have taken the bar exam or the MPRE does not mean that you have an NCBE Number. Only individuals who have created an NCBE Number account via our website have been assigned NCBE Numbers. Use Not sure if you have an NCBE Number? to determine if you have an NCBE Number.
I took the MPRE or MBE before I requested an NCBE Number. Will my prior MPRE or MBE score be associated with my NCBE Number?
NCBE uses other data points -- name, SSN, date of birth, date of exam, etc. – to identify scores earned prior to use of the NCBE Number.
Do I have to request an NCBE Number to use NCBE's score services to transfer my MBE, MPRE, or UBE score?
Yes. Beginning in 2013, requests for score services are submitted from the individual’s secure NCBE Number account. Create an account and request an NCBE Number to access the online score services request from the account.
If I created an online account on NCBE’s website to complete the character and fitness application, do I need to create a separate account to request an NCBE Number?
Yes. At this time, the NCBE Number account and the electronic character and fitness application account are separate.
What if I do not have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the U.S. or a national identification number issued by my home country?
You may enter your passport numeric or alphanumeric designator (i.e., serial number) in the National Identification Number field and select the country that issued the passport from the Issuing Country drop-down menu.
If I subsequently take the bar examination in another state, do I need to request a new NCBE Number?
No, but you must update your online NCBE Number account to reflect the new testing jurisdiction and exam date. Log in to your NCBE Number account and select the Bar Exams tab to enter the new jurisdiction and date.
If I retake the examination in the same jurisdiction, do I need to request a new NCBE Number?
No, but you must update your online NCBE Number account to reflect the new exam date. To update, log in to your NCBE Number account and select the Bar Exams tab to enter the new exam date.
